Augmenting Care Facilities

FABhomes are an effective way to augment the capacity of an existing lodge, care facility, or small hospital.

A FABvillage can be easily deployed on the grounds of a new or existing lodge, care facility, or hospital. This is a simple and quick option for oversubscribed facilities who need to increase capacity. It is also an effective strategy for increasing the diversity of housing options, particularly for couples or those who could benefit from restorative care. The portable nature of the FABhomes units means that they can be also be redeployed to other facilities within the system as capacity needs evolve over time.

In this 7-unit case study, the FABvillage is located immediately adjacent to an older care facility in a small rural town. The current building was constructed in the 1980’s and only has single rooms. The facility has a waiting list and there is a strong need for a housing option that can accommodate couples.

A covered walkway connects the 7 FABhome units to an existing exit door from one of the original wards to allow easy circulation to and from the FABhomes by staff and residents. There is an option to temporarily enclose the walkway during the winter. The new ‘ward’ of FABhome rooms creates an exterior courtyard with the existing facility.

Six of the new units are designated for residents who are semi-independent and require lodge level care. The remaining unit is intended for restorative care patients who are discharged from the local hospital into the unit on a temporary basis to help them recover and regain their abilities before returning to their own homes. The transfer of lower care level units out of the original facility frees up 7 existing rooms that can now be used for higher levels of long-term care.

Meals, laundry, and medical care are provided through the existing facility and the FABhome residents have access to the dining room and all communal activities. FABassist has also been deployed throughout the existing facility so that all residents can benefit from the entertainment, remote activity, wellness monitoring and family dashboard modules.

The project is projected to be completed and occupied six months from the completion and approval of concept design.
