FABassist is an age-friendly digital system that integrates smart home controls with entertainment, activity, and wellness monitoring.

FABassist consists of five interconnected modules

FABassist+Interior+1+-+Home.jpg

Smart Home

The smart home module increases livability by allowing the resident to control the basic operation of the house from anywhere, including their bed. Family members can also remotely access the system for troubleshooting and peace of mind.

FABassist+Interior+1+-+Entertainment.jpg

entertainment

The entertainment module reduces frustration by consolidating cable TV and digital streaming services into one system. Families can remotely access the system to help loved ones having technical difficulties and find programs to watch.

FABassist+Interior+1+-+Activities.jpg

Activity

The activity module helps reduce social isolation and loneliness by providing residents with a regular series of on-line group activities and classes (exercise, bingo, singalongs, etc.) Residents sign up for activities and receive scheduling reminders on their television.

FABassist+Interior+1+-+Wellness.jpg

Wellness Monitoring

The wellness monitoring module provides peace of mind to family members and valuable information to health care providers. Twice a day, the system prompts residents to complete regular wellness status updates that are automatically sent to families and logged for nursing staff.

Family Dashboard

The family dashboard allows residents to give remote access to family, friends, and caregivers. The dashboard provides an up-to-the-minute status update on the smart home system, remote troubleshooting access into the entertainment and activity modules and viewing access to the resident’s wellness log.

FABassist is also available as a stand-alone system that can be deployed in existing lodges and assisted living facilities.

The facility version of FABassist includes the Activity, Entertainment, and Wellness Monitoring modules as well as the Family Dashboard. It can help improve the quality of life for residents of assisted living facilities by reducing isolation and loneliness during periods when communal in-person events and activities are postponed due to infectious disease outbreaks. FABassist also increases peace of mind for family members, particularly when visitations are not allowed, by providing twice daily resident self-reported wellness updates and by allowing them to remotely access their loved one’s television to troubleshoot the entertainment and activity modules.

FABvillage

Enscape_2020-03-22-12-28-23_VignetteC.jpg

FABvillage is a cluster of individual living units organized around a communal deck and garden.

FABvillage layouts are custom designed to fit their site and the adjacent community context. They can range in size from 3 units and up and you can combine different FABhome models for maximum flexibility and efficiency. New or existing amenity buildings can be integrated into a FABvillage to accommodate community resources such as a common room, café, or recreational space. They can also be created on the grounds of a new or existing lodge or care facility to augment capacity and diversity housing options, particularly for higher-ability couples. If the FABhomes are deployed on temporary foundations, units can be added or subtracted from the layout over time to match the size of the FABvillage to changing demands.

FABvillages leverage existing community networks and underutilized civic resources to help ensure residents are embedded in the social and physical fabric of their community. We partner with municipalities, community groups, developers, and care facility operators to create high-quality, independent living housing options for older adults who require varying levels of physical and cognitive support to continue living in their community.

FABvillage+Features.jpg

FABvillage Features:

> FABvillages can be a stand-alone configuration or adjoined to an existing structure such a community centre or church.
> FABhome units open onto a shared deck and garden
> Wheelchair accessible common entry to the deck and units
> Wheelchair access to parking for residents and guests
> Exterior safety lighting
> Physically distanced living units and open air circulation space on the deck help reduce the spread of infectious disease, and allow pin-point resident specific quarantining and limitations on external visitors
> Physically distanced living units and open air circulation space on the deck help decrease the spread of infectious disease without require blanket quarantines and extreme limitations on external visitations

There are three basic FABvillage types:

Type 1: Stand-Alone FABvillage

A standalone FABvillage is most appropriately deployed when the number of required units is small and the Village is either strongly integrated into a community support network such as a faith-based group or there are a variety of age friendly services in close walking distance.

In this five-unit case study, the stand-alone FABvillage is located on a vacant corner lot in close proximity to a local church who is sponsoring the project so that it’s older members can remain living in the community. The church manages the day-to-day operation of the village, and volunteers assist with weekly grocery delivery, transportation to appointments, as well as an optional weekly laundry service and a mobile meal delivery service. Medical care is provided on a scheduled basis by provincial home care services. One of the units is used as a respite suite that congregants can rent weekly for short-term stays by older family members. Resident and visitor off-street parking is located on the alley at the rear of the project.

Type 2: FABvillage With Existing Support Building

A FABvillage can be located on the grounds of an existing building such as a community centre or clubhouse which is then repurposed to provide social amenities to village residents. It is most appropriate when the client owns, or has access to, an under-performing community-oriented facility.

In this seven-unit case study, the FABvillage is located in a small town on a municipally owned park adjacent to an existing community centre that is not being regularly used. The town is sponsoring the project and has contracted a local property management firm to look after day-to-day operations. A meeting room in the corner of the community centre adjacent to the Village entry is converted into a common room for Village residents featuring a small kitchen, communal dining table, a big-screen TV and a fireplace. A committee of Village residents organizes transportation, grocery delivery, and age-friendly programming in the main hall.

The community centre programming is available to all older adults in the town and surrounding area. Optional meal service is available through a contract with a local restaurant. Medical care is provided on a scheduled basis by provincial home care services. A local charitable foundation provides an annual grant that subsidizes the monthly rental cost for low-income seniors. Resident parking is provided off the rear alley, and visitors can park on the street in front of the village and community centre.

Type 3: FABvillage with New Amenities

A FABvillage with new amenities is most appropriately deployed when there are no community amenities in close proximity. This is a particularly useful option for small hamlets who could leverage the new amenities to serve all residents in the broader community.

In this 15-unit case study, the FABvillage is located in a small remote hamlet in a rural farming district. It is located across the street from the hockey arena and elementary school, the only community services in the hamlet. The project is sponsored by a local non-profit housing society created to help keep local seniors from being relocated to a care facility in the region’s largest town. With funding from the municipal district, the housing society expanded the project to include a community building which includes a small café, community room, and wellness centre (physio, exercise, hair care). The community building faces the main road and acts as a strip mall for the broader farming district.

The commercial units also open onto the communal deck at the rear of the site allowing easy access for the residents of the 15 FABhome units. The café uses a portion of the village deck for outdoor food service, and there is a tot-lot playground adjacent to the community room. Parking for visitors to the commercial units is located along the front of the community building, and multi-vehicle resident covered carports are located at each end of the Village.

Meal service is provided by the café for an additional cost. Residents can chose to walk over to the café or have their meal delivered to their home. Laundry and transportation services are also available at an additional cost. Medical care is provided on a scheduled basis by provincial home care services. The café and wellness centre are able to operate through a combination of contracted meals and services provided to residents and walk-in trade from the surround farming district. Commercial rents are kept low and are used to offset utility and other operating costs.
