Small towns can be very difficult places in which to age, particularly when it's no longer possible to remain living in your own home. Publicly funded lodges and assisted living facilities are being concentrated in larger regional centres that drain the older adult population from surrounding small towns and require friends and family members to drive considerable distances for a visit.
At the same time, private-care facility operators aren't usually interested in building new projects in small towns because of low population densities and an uncertain long-term future. Add to that the simple fact that most age-in-community innovations are geared to urban contexts, and the plight of the 400,000 rural Canadian seniors who are at risk of premature institutionalization is fast becoming critical.
